The Puritans that arrived in Massachusetts in 1620 intended to build a new Israel in the new world. They believed that they were the ancient Hebrews who were chosen by God to head towards the Promised Land. The Puritans believed that they were sent by God to be a light unto the nations of all the world; a shining city upon a hill. They intended to establish their ideal Christian paradise on their “city on the hill.” The original vision for America was that this new land would be the home of Christian people who would live together in peace with outstanding churches and a Christian civil government. Indeed in Massachusetts the Puritans established a Bible based theocracy, in which only church members had any political rights. The Puritan reason for founding America was for establishing Christian colonies that would advance the kingdom of Christ and be a light to the world to the glory of God.
